This is the history of our Sponsored Cat ‘Tom’

One of our volunteers Marie regularly fed her friends cats in the conservatory when they went on holiday and noticed that a tabby cat was stealing all their food. She told her friends what was happening and shortly afterwards Marie had a telephone call to say that the tabby had urinated in the conservatory and due to the smell, he needed to be removed.

After a few weeks Marie eventually managed to trap him and took him to the vets for neutering, he was extremely spitty and wild. The plan was to put him back to where he had come from as there were no spaces available with our fosterers but on examination by the vet he revealed that the cat had in fact only got three normal paws and the fourth one was very deformed and only half a paw existed. He was also suffering with Asthma and he was blind in one eye. To add to his problems, the vet couldn’t be certain of his age but thought he was at least 13 or 14 years old.

With this information Marie felt she couldn’t put him back to a life outside again so decided to give him a chance at her home. He was put into a pen, in Marie’s spare bedroom but was very depressed and still quite wild and untouchable, which Marie found frightening. A week passed and by then Marie was able to put her hand into the pen with no spitting at all, so she let him out of the pen and gave him the freedom of the bedroom. It was amazing how he had come round –he had just been so scared!

Marie started grooming him gently, he really loved it although it took 6 weeks to get off a very thick and dirty coat, he  also had a huge tick on his back.

He has turned out to be a very lovely boy and adores his food. He mainly lives upstairs in a cosy warm room with a very comfortable sofa with his own soft blanket to lie on. He comes downstairs each evening to see if he can steal any food from her other cats which is probably how he spent his life to survive.

He is now a happy and loving boy and Marie is so glad she didn’t put him back out in the cold, she adores him and eventually hopes that he will get confident enough to come downstairs and sit in the garden-Marie looks forward to that day and would love to see it happen soon
